Achievements:
If we're not drenched from the heat, we're soaked in rain! Despite inclement weather, WST spirits were high and our volunteers were focused throughout our tri-meet with Killington and Quechee yesterday. We want to take the time to recognize some important achievements.

First, Mia Roof and Mary Ann Bees competed as WST Swimmers for the first time yesterday. Fantastic job!

In addition to the fact that 28 swimmers had seasonal bests and 4 more swimmers are now State qualifiers, we also had several outstanding seasonal improvements from our WST swimmers including:

100 Free-Campbell Boswell, 6.90 seconds

50 Free-
Katrina Boswell, 5.01 seconds
Monica Devine, 4.65 seconds
Isaac Emery, 4.58 seconds
Megan Grey, 7.56 seconds

25 Free-Sidney Pilot, 4.42 seconds

Also notable, Hannah Cox and Campbell Boswell tied for Individual High Points Winners for the meet with 24 individual points each. Well done.

Congratulations to all our WST swimmers, not only for their successful swims but also for their excellent meet etiquette.

Thank you again to Kent McFarland who has made the 2010 Dolphin System transition seem easy when it is in fact complicated and fast-paced work. Thank you also to all our swimmers who not only competed, but also helped with younger swimmers and/or with meet set-up, post-meet clean-up and ribbon sorting, including Monica Devine, Finn McFarland, Piper Jenne, Grace Amato, Eve Amato and Maddie Gilbert. Special thanks to the timers, bull-pen volunteers and stroke and turn officials for maintaining calm in the midst of weather chaos.

Achievements:
Despite the oppressive heat, our swimmers made a splash at the meet on Tuesday against the Connecticut River Valley Stingrays. First of all, congratulations to Gordon MacMaster and Hannah Reed who competed for the first time. We also want to recognize two outstanding improvements in the 200 Free: Eve Amato took off over 9 seconds, and Anna Ramsey dropped over 12 seconds. Other significant improvements include: Adi Wilson (25 free time; 8.47 seconds), Griffin Boswell (100 breast; 5.73 seconds), Oliver Wilson (50 free; 8 seconds) and Zane Fields (50 breast; 5 seconds). All told, 24 swimmers achieved personal bests at the meet. Your hard work is paying off! Also, well done to Miranda Holson, Colin Terwelp and Griffin Boswell who tied for Top Point Earner, each scoring 20 individual points for WST. Congratulations to all our WST swimmers on such a fantastic turn out and a strong performance. Thank you also to all our volunteers, including timers and officials. We couldn't do it without you!

Handy Health Hints:
Thanks to all the swimmers who have been bringing water to practice. Keep it up! In addition to hydrating and eating well, swimmers should be sure to take care of their ear canals, too. Not only do swimmers have to deal with all the wonderful ailments of childhood, some may be particularly susceptible to a painful ear infection called swimmer's ear. Preventative ear drops are available over-the-counter (ie: Swim Ear or AuroDri), or you can find recipes for home remedies (including the one listed on the Mayo Clinic link). If you are concerned your child might have swimmer's ear, be sure to check with a pediatrician as soon as possible to prevent further ear damage. 2010 WST Season Coming Soon

ALL SWIM TEAM SUPPORTERS
Join us for Registration and Orientation Night--JUNE 1st, 6pm-7pm
WST Registration Night will be a little different this year. Please join us promptly at 6pm for a brief introduction to our new Parent Volunteer Coordinator, Julia Haynes. Julia would like to take about 15 minutes of your time to help familiarize those of you who may be new and to begin organizing our volunteers for the 2010 season. If you cannot attend this meeting for any reason, please contact Julia Haynes to help her as she attempts to create order out of chaos! Julia's email address is: julia.haynesvt@gmail.com. We will also encourage all families to complete a meet attendance check-off sheet on registration night. You might want to consider bringing your calendar, so you can record important dates and sign-up your swimmers for meets. You will also have time to register your swimmers and speak with Recreation Staff and Coaches, and we will also have sample suits available for swimmers to try on.

ELIGIBILITY
All swimmers who were members of WST last year are eligible to swim if 19 years or under. Any new swimmers will be required to demonstrate a handful of safety skills in order to be eligible. Please see below for a detailed list.

NEW and PROSPECTIVE FAMILIES and SWIMMERS
Thank you to all of you who have recently expressed interest in joining our team. We hope you will be able to join us this summer. Please note, we do have eligibility requirements for swim team in an effort to promote the safety of all our team members and to encourage a successful and enjoyable season.

WST is not a learn-to-swim program, so we ask that prospective swimmers are able to demonstrate the following basic water skills:
  1. Bob 15 times
  2. Safely jump into and exit the deep end
  3. Glide/Float on stomach
  4. Glide/Float on back
  5. Swim the length of the pool, unassisted and without stopping
  6. Tread water for one minute
  7. Retrieve an object from chest deep water
Even if your child is eligible for swim team, we strongly encourage a combination of swim lessons and swim team for younger or less experienced swimmers. Swimmers enrolled in swim lessons, either at WRC or another facility, and who are close to achieving these goals could be eligible for swim team. Please talk to a coach about whether or not your child is ready for swim team.

Swimmers must be nineteen years of age or under for the duration of the season.

Please feel to email wstcoaches@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns.

Practices are held daily, rain or shine.

12:00-1:00 10 and Under
1:00-2:00 11 and Older
7:00-8:00pm 11 and Older (offered based on attendance, no Tuesday practices)
