Awards Night & Team Potluck - Tuesday, August 2

Dear WST Swimmers and Families,

Join us on Tuesday, August 2nd from 5pm-7pm as we share a meal, swim and celebrate the achievements of the 2016 Woodstock Swim Team.

What to bring:
If your last name begins with A-E, please bring an appetizer.
If your last name begins with F-N, please bring a dessert.
If your last name begins with M-Z, please bring a main dish.

The Rec will provide all paper products, utensils and drinks.

As some swimmers have special dietary needs, please include a label for any dishes containing nuts or common allergens such as diary or seafood.

There will be time for free swim and pool games, and adults are encouraged to wear a bathing suit for family relays.

Last two meets coming up. I’m not sure who is going to the Last Chance meet in Rockingham Tuesday or Leagues NEXT Saturday. I have NOT put in the manual volunteer forms into the slots, so please sign up if you have a swimmer in either or both meets.

Team Photo TODAY - Lake Swim Friday

Team Photo: July 18th (Monday) TODAY at 12:45 pm.  11 and over swimmers should come a bit early for the photo, and those who have team suits can wear them.  After we're done, we'll finish normal practice for the 11 and over swimmers.  

Lake Swim at Woodward Reservoir: July 22nd (Friday).  This is a distance swim open to swimmers 13 and older.  We will have normal practice from 12-1 for 10&unders, and we will leave at 1:00pm from the parking lot at the Rec for the lake swim. Swimmers MUST hand in a signed liability form before they can participate (no exceptions can be made).  There will be no regular 1-2pm practice on the 22nd.  

For the Lake Swim, we will need at least one or two adults in boats as boat support.  Is anyone interested and willing?  It's a lot of fun and a great paddle!  Please let us know ASAP. 

Rutland Sprints - Saturday, July 16

Next Saturday, July 16 is Rutland Sprints at the Northwood Pool. 

If your child is swimming, please volunteer for a spot. Many hands make light work and we can have many shifts of timers with more people. If you gave a volunteer sign up form to the office, I have manually entered your selection into the system.

Thank you to the people who consistently volunteer and do whatever is needed. You know who you are and the coaches and I appreciate it!

Pancakes Have Changed to Ice Cream and More News

There will be NO Pancake Brunch this year. Instead, a summertime ice cream social!

Friday, July 15 - Birthday Friday during Friday Fun practices (12-1 and 1-2 pm).

-  Complete with Ice Cream!

-  Everyone is welcome to come - this is our fundraiser in place of the pancake brunch.

-  Please have swimmers bring a small donation for the ice cream.

Why Having Current Swim Entries Is Important - Please Read.

A quick note about participation in meets: a few days before every meet, Maddie sends out a list of "pre entries," which is a list of swimmers who have indicated they will participate in the meet.  She does this because she needs an accurate list of swimmers in order to form relays, and entries are usually due a few days before the meet.  

This means that if your swimmer is on the list, we expect that he/she will be there and swim.  

On the other hand, if your swimmer is not on the list, it is very difficult to add him/her to the meet on the day of the meet.  

When the list of swimmers isn't accurate, relays have to change and get scratched, leaving other teammates without relays they were expecting.  

Please check the lists of pre-entries and let Maddie know if any changes are needed ASAP.  Some amount of change is unavoidable, but we're hoping to minimize it for future meets. 

So now....please take a moment and check the list for SATURDAY, JULY 9th (this weekend) and let Maddie know if any changes are needed.  (this is the one that was sign-up via Doodle poll)

Info for Today's Meet at Home - Tuesday, July 5, 2016

-Please arrive at 3:45 to be ready for a 4pm warmup.  The meet will start at 5pm.  

-You might want to bring a sharpie or pen and paper to write down your swimmers' events, heats and lane numbers.

-Families are expected to contribute to the concession stand organized by the Rec. Please bring a goodie to sell at the stand.

Practice Update for Thursday/Friday June 30/July 1

Hi all,

Because of the away meet rescheduled for tomorrow, there will be NO afternoon practice on Thursday, June 30. There will be a practice from 8-9 a.m.

On Friday, July 1, there will be a morning practice from 8-9 a.m. plus the afternoon practices.

MEET POSTPONED

Today's meet at Manchester has been postponed due to likely thunderstorms to THURSDAY, JUNE 30TH at the same time.  We will need to redo entries by tomorrow night, so I'll be sending some info about that very shortly.  Stay tuned, and thanks for your patience today!

Hi All - Just a few bits of info with more to come about the Rutland Springs on Saturday, July 16.

Location: Northwood Pool in Rutland.

-  Entry fee is $8.

-  There will be a concession stand.

-  Warm ups at 8 a.m. and the meet will start at 9 a.m. and should be over no later than 12:30 p.m. 

-  Electronic timing.

-  We'll need to provide some timers and Stroke and Turn officials.

- Warmup time: TBD, but sometime between 4 and 5. The meet will start at 5pm. There will be food and drink for sale.

As a general rule, we have practice rain or shine and if it's thundering we come inside and watch swimming videos, talk about meets, practice relays, etc.  There's a lot of learning that can be done outside the pool!

The Saturday, July 9 meet originally scheduled to be held away in Rutland has been CHANGED and we will be hosting the meet at home.

It will probably begin around 10 a.m. with warm-ups an hour prior.

PLEASE RE-SIGN UP FOR THIS MEET REGARDLESS OF IF YOU CAN ATTEND OR NOT.

Practice Begins on Monday!

We're excited to get the summer swim season underway this coming Monday, June 20. Practices are fun, allow swimmers to reconnect with friends and make new ones, and spur a bit of excitement toward competition at our meets.

Practices are held based on age.

10 & Unders - Monday-Friday, noon - 1 p.m.

11 & Overs - Monday-Friday, 1-2 p.m.

Optional 11 & Overs - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 8-9 a.m.

Please arrive with enough time before practice to be ready and on deck about 5 minutes before your practice time begins.

Things you may want to bring:
-  sunscreen (put it on before you even get to the pool to save time!)
-  waterbottle
-  towel
-  swim and goggles

If you haven't turned in your Meet Attendance and Volunteer Sign Up Forms, please bring those on Monday as well. See you at the pool!

Last Chance to Order a Team Suit for Summer 2016

Coach Maddie will be sending more information related to the start of the season and practices starting next week but for now: the final SUIT ORDER will go in on Friday morning, and the sample suits for trying on will be sent back to the vendor.  If you still want to order but haven't yet, stop by the Rec before Friday to place your order. Thanks.

A quick reminder to please turn in your Meet Sign Up and Volunteer Sign Up Sheets at the front desk at the Rec Center. We need these by the end of this week, before our first practices next week, in order to get our meet rosters started as well as volunteer sign ups arranged.

Registration TONIGHT, Thursday, June 2

Registration for Woodstock Swim Team 2016 is tonight at the Rec Center from 5-7 p.m.
-- Register at the front desk then head downstairs to pick up paperwork, meet the coaches, try and suits and say hi!
-- Suits are NOT required
-- If you can't make it tonight, register online or at the front desk; suits will be at the rec for about a week to try on

Volunteering
-- Please remember to volunteer. Fill out your Meet Sign Up Sheet AND Volunteer Sign Up Sheet and return to the front desk (or drop it off with the coaches tonight). If you have a swimmer participating in a meet, we ask that you please volunteer at the meet. These meets can't run without volunteers.
-- Kim Jackson will be using Volunteer Spot again to manage the volunteers. If you fill out a sign up sheet, she'll include your request manually in Volunteer Spot. You will also get an email prior to each meet reminding you to sign up.

Swim Team Registration Night - June 2, 2016

Woodstock Swim Team Registration Night will be held next Thursday, June 2 from 5-7 p.m. at Woodstock Rec. Come in and get registered, try on and order your team suit and cap, and learn more about the team - new and returning swimmers welcome!

If you try on and order your suit at registration night, you should receive your suit in time for the start of the season.

Stroke & Turn Officials Needed - Clinics Offered

As always, we are looking to train new Stroke & Turn officials to help out at meets. 

Experience as a former (or current) swimmer is NOT necessary; anyone can be trained and contribute significantly to our team!  

As a team, we have the obligation of training at least 2 (hopefully more!) new S&T officials each year, so please let us know if you are interested or have any questions/concerns regarding the training. There are 3 stroke and turn clinics offered this summer (see schedule below). We are also offering a starter clinic at the Woodstock Rec, so if you're interested in learning how to be the driving force behind running the races this is your chance! We cannot run meets without S&T officials, so please consider taking the leap and getting trained! We need to submit lists of names prior to each clinic, so let us know ASAP.

Weekday meets generally start at 5pm. Home meet WST warm ups are at 4pm, WST away warm ups often start at 4:30pm.

* Asterix indicates there are fees associated with the meet. Meet fees are not included in your registration fees and can range anywhere from $5-10 per swimmer for Invitational meets up to $5 per event for the VSA Championship meet. Swimmers are limited to 4 individual events and 2 relays for all meets. 

We wish to make sure all who have interest in participating may do so. Please feel free to contact Gail about scholarship assistance available to eligible WRC swimmers.

**SVSL Championship is a fee-based meet open to all registered swimmers who have competed in at least TWO SVSL regular season meets. Fees are usually $15-20 per swimmer.

***VSA is a fee-based meet and is open to all registered swimmers who have competed in at least THREE SVSL meets and who have met or exceeded the posted qualifying times. The Rec Center covers the cost of relays ($20 per relay entered). The maximum per swimmer fee would be $20 for the Championship meet, but may be less depending on how many events a swimmer enters.

Head Coach Announcement

HEAD COACH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congratulations, Coach Alex! Coach Alex is graduating summa cum laude from Simmons College with a BA in Psychology in just a few short weeks. Wow! Coach Alex has also secured an exciting research position at UVM, and therefore, sadly for us, plans to move to Burlington this summer. Please join me in thanking Alex for everything she has given to the team and wishing her much success. Thank you so much, Alex. We will miss you very much and we hope to see you on the pool deck sometime this summer!

Alex's departure of course meant we needed to find a coach to lead the team for summer 2016.

We are therefore pleased to announce that Maddie Gilbert, a longtime WST swimmer and former Head Coach, has just accepted the WST Head Coach position for the 2016 summer season. Maddie recently returned from Brazil where she was teaching English as a Fulbright scholar. Coach Maddie will be once again joining WST for the summer before she heads to NYU for graduate school this fall.
